The Roaring 2020s
History recognizes the 1920s as an age during which the economy and culture flourished. Many of this decade’s revelations have once again materialized a century later. As the radio revolutionized advertising and entertainment, social media has transformed consumer culture while empowering anyone to curate their own brand. A contemporary questioning of social constructs in a society where labels have become less relevant mimics the reactionary flapper era of liberation. However, these historic milestones followed war and havoc. The Roaring Twenties demonstrated how prosperity may rise from devastation. As the new decade unravels, we find ourselves manifesting resilience once again.
Adapting to reimagined social protocols has been like navigating speakeasies. Although recreational life has suffered a dry spell, society has brewed new sources of amusement. Makeshift patios and takeaway cocktails have kept the streets buzzing while parks have become primary destinations. Even in an era of prohibition, the thirst for entertainment can still be quenched.
While not all pastimes are available for enjoyment, the social recession has allowed people to further self-reflect with fewer distractions. I have taken advantage of this additional leisure to reconnect with myself artistically. The past few years have welcomed the most personally transformative events. I completed my undergraduate studies, moved to Brooklyn, made my debut on the New York art scene, and assumed a graphic design role with a powerhouse company.
These accomplishments were not achieved easily or promptly. However, the results of my determination revived my confidence. This newfound self-assurance allowed me to center myself. My focus then shifted to reinventing my creative identity. As Jay Gatsby reintroduced himself to Daisy Buchanan after establishing a self-made empire, I am ready to reintroduce myself after designing my success. Although this year has yet to deliver the resurgence of prosperity for which I hoped, I am blessed to be experiencing my personal Roaring Twenties.
